Sonora, CA (July 12, 2018) – The Sonora Police Department reported that a fatal pedestrian accident took place along Mono Way near Truckenmiller Road. The incident occurred a little before midnight on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. Authorities have not revealed any detailed information concerning the people that were involved in the crash at this time.
As per the Sonora Police report, a 44-year old man was walking eastbound on Mono Way when he was struck by a 2008 Prius driven by a 30-year old from Tuolumne City. Authorities have not officially confirmed if the pedestrian was walking down the highway or had attempted to cross Mono. Afterward, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from severe trauma.
No details concerning the motorist have been disclosed, but law enforcement has confirmed that impairment did not contribute to the crash, most likely.
As of now, the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are working hard to determine what specifically caused the crash. Forensic teams will examine photographs of the crash site and inspect the 2008 Prius for mechanical issues or system failure. Officials will also consider if drunk driving, drug abuse, negligence, distracted driving, or reckless behavior played any part in the events leading up to the crash.
By law, motorists are obliged to decrease speed and provide right-of-way to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crossing zones. Officials will also consider if the victim had been walking in a marked location along the freeway or had attempted to cross in an unsafe zone.
Depending on the final results of the case, the family of the pedestrian will have the legal rights to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the guilty party. By seeking legal assistance, these individuals can receive compensation for a variety of issues including medical bills, funeral expenses, and tragic loss.
