Angels Camp, CA (July 12, 2018) – Local police reported that a man died as the result of an accident that took place along South Main Street near Mayo Street. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 AM in the morning on Sunday, July 1, 2018. Authorities have identified the victim as 60-year old Jon Vanwey and the motorist as 55-year old Jutta Larson, both residents of Angels Camp.
As per the police report, Larson was driving a 2012 Equinox northbound on South Main Street when, at some point, she plowed into Vanwey. Afterward, Vanwey was transported via air ambulance to a hospital in Modesto, where he succumbed to severe trauma on July 7, 2018. Authorities confirmed Larson did not sustain injuries in the crash.
Authorities are working hard to determine what specifically caused the crash. Forensic teams will examine photographs of the crash site and inspect the 2012 Equinox for mechanical issues or system failure. Officials will also consider if drunk driving, drug abuse, negligence, distracted driving, or reckless behavior played any part in the events leading up to the crash.
By law, motorists are obliged to decrease speed and provide right-of-way to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crossing zones. Officials will also consider if the victim had been walking in a marked location along the freeway or had attempted to cross in an unsafe zone.
Depending on the final results of the case, the family of the pedestrian will have the legal rights to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the guilty party. By seeking legal assistance, these individuals can receive compensation for a variety of issues including medical bills, funeral expenses, and tragic loss.
