San Diego, CA – Three Dead after Violent Pileup Crash on Northbound Interstate 805

San Diego, CA (August 24, 2018) – The California Highway Patrol reported that three people died as the result of a brutal wrong-way collision that took place along the northbound lanes of Interstate 805. The violent collision transpired at some time before 4:45 PM on Thursday, August 23, 2018. At this time, no detailed information concerning the identities of the people involved in the crash has been released.

Based on the initial CHP report, an 18-year old man was driving a McLaren southbound across the north 805 HOV lane, at dangerously high speeds of less than 100 miles per hour. At some point, without warning, he collided with an oncoming SUV. According to eyewitnesses, additional vehicles attempted to maneuver around the violent accident, ultimately resulting in a dangerous pileup.

Following the incident, emergency teams confirmed the occupants of the SUV had died in the accident. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined the victims were a 43-year old mother and her 12-year old daughter. No other details about the victims were immediately disclosed.

Officials from the San Diego Fire Department provided more details concerning the fatalities. During the impact, one person was killed inside a vehicle, while the second was thrown onto the highway. The third victim, who had been hospitalized for severe trauma, succumbed to their injuries soon after.

Following the crash, authorities dispatched a SigAlert at approximately 4:45 PM that afternoon and rerouted northbound traffic to Mira Mesa Boulevard. All lanes between La Jolla Boulevard and Mira Mesa were blocked to traffic.

After a total of six hours, law enforcement officials allowed motorists to pass through two lanes on I-805.

As of now, investigators are looking into why the McLaren was driving in the wrong direction.

We extend our most heartfelt prayers and our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased victims and wish them strength and peace of mind during this difficult, tragic time.

Based on the report, officials are still unsure of why the 18-year old motorist was driving the wrong way on Interstate 805. As part of the ongoing investigation, forensic teams will inspect the McLaren, the SUV, and additional vehicles involved in the crash and examine photos of the site to determine if mechanical issues or system failure contributed to the crash. Likewise, authorities will consider if drugs, alcohol, negligence, recklessness, or distracted driving played any role in the events leading up to the accident.

In the event of a traffic accident resulting in a fatality, the members of the deceased victim’s family may have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the guilty party and, ultimately, receive compensation for funeral expenses, the tragic loss of a loved one, and additional unfortunate circumstances.
