San Diego, CA – Bertha Estrada Loses Her Life in Pedestrian Accident on State Route 94

San Diego, CA (November 2, 2018) – A Good Samaritan was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday morning while aiding victims of an earlier crash in the Golden Hill area. She has been identified as 19-year-old Bertha Aida Estrada, of San Diego. The tragic accident transpired at approximately 1:40 am Thursday morning on November 1st on eastbound state Route 94, just west of 32nd Street.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 23-year-old woman was operating a Honda Civic when she suddenly crashed into the rear of a gray Mercedes sedan, driven by an 82-year-old woman. The impact of the collision caused the driver of the Mercedes to lose control and hit the center divider. The initial report indicates, the Mercedes stopped in left-hand lanes blocking traffic on the roadway. Estrada pulled over onto the right shoulder of the freeway and ran across freeway lanes to help the occupants of the Mercedes.

Estrada stood beside the vehicle in traffic lanes when an oncoming Jeep Patriot driven by a 24-year-old-man struck both the Mercedes and Estrada. The force of the impact threw Estrada into the westbound lanes of state Route 94. Investigators believe Estrada was then struck again by a westbound vehicle whose driver fled the scene. EMS worked tirelessly to try to revive the victim but tragically she did not survive her injuries and passed away at the scene of the accident. Both, the driver of the Mercedes and the driver of the jeep sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment of those injuries. Officials have confirmed, alcohol or drugs were not considered to be factors in the crashes.

An investigation into this tragic incident is currently underway.
