Merced County, CA – Man Dead, Woman Injured after Violent Collision Involving Semi-Truck on Northbound Highway 33 near Sanches Road

Merced County, CA (August 15, 2018) – The California Highway Patrol reported that a man died and a woman sustained severe injuries as the result of a violent collision involving a semi-truck that took place along the northbound lanes on Highway 33, in the vicinity of Sanches Road. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 PM in the afternoon on Tuesday, August 14, 2018. No details concerning the identities of the deceased Newman man and his female passenger have been revealed at this time. Meanwhile, authorities have identified the truck operator as 62-year old Templeton resident Christopher Voelker.

According to the initial CHP report, the Newman man had been driving a 2008 Ford Expedition along Highway 33 when, for indeterminate reasons, he swerved into opposing traffic. At the same time, Voelker was driving a Peterbilt semi-truck along the same route. At some point, without warning, the Ford plowed head-on into the oncoming Peterbilt.

Sometime later, officials confirmed the Newman man succumbed to his injuries at the crash site.

The female occupant of the Ford sustained severe injuries during the impact and was brought to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto to receive treatment.

Officials did not specify if the truck driver sustained injuries in the crash.

Authorities have determined that DUI was not a cause. According to additional reports, the conditions of the roadway and the weather were aria and hot.

Presently, investigators are looking into a probable cause of the crash.

We extend our most heartfelt prayers and our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased Newman man and wish them peace of mind and strength during this difficult, tragic time. We also extend our most loving prayers to the female passenger and wish her a swift and efficient recovery from her injuries.

Fatal Head-On Collision in Merced County

As indicated in the report, certain issues surrounding the fatal collision on Highway 33 remain unresolved. Officials have already ruled out alcohol and drugs as possible causes. In this light, distracted driving and negligence may be considered as factors that could have contributed to the crash. Likewise, forensic teams will inspect the Ford and the Peterbilt and examine photos of the crash site to determine if mechanical issues or system failure forced the vehicles to collide.

In the event of a violent traffic accident resulting in fatalities, the members of the deceased victims’ families may have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit and, ultimately, receive compensation for the tragic loss of a loved one and funeral expenses, amongst other unfortunate circumstances.
