Malibu, CA – Two People Killed, Two Injured after Violent Multi-Vehicle Accident on Pacific Coast Highway near Trancas Canyon Road

Malibu, CA (August 5, 2018) – Los Angeles local news reported that two people were killed, two more injured as the result of a brutal accident involving multiple vehicles that took place on the Pacific Coast Highway, in the vicinity of Trancas Canyon Road. Officials first reported the incident at approximately 12:07 PM in the afternoon last Friday, August 3, 2018. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased victims have been identified as 60-year old La Habra resident Rick Artes and 48-year old Mike Hollinrake, who was reported to be homeless. No details about the identities of a bicyclist and a passenger who were involved in the crash have been revealed at this time.

Based on reports from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu-Lost Hills Station, a Mercury minivan, gray in color, had been traveling at a high rate of speed along the Pacific Coast Highway when, at some point, the driver attempted to pass an oncoming vehicle. As a result, the Mercury swerved out of control and slid across the center divider. Ultimately, the van plowed into the front end of a red Dodge Ram truck.

Sometime later, police deputies were sent to the scene and sent confirmations that the drivers of the Mercury and the Dodge had died at the crash site.

Meanwhile, a passenger who had been riding in the Dodge was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Medical personnel have revealed the patient is not in critical condition.

At the time of the crash, a bicyclist sustained non-life threatening injuries after being clipped by one of the Dodge truck’s wheels. This individual also required hospitalization. Officials have not disclosed the rider’s current condition.

Due to the accident, the California Highway Patrol sent out a SigAlert and ultimately closed one north lane and all south lanes along the Pacific Coast Highway. Presently, the investigation is ongoing.

We extend our most heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the families and friends of Mr. Rick Artes and Mr. Mike Hollinrake and wish them strength and peace of mind during this difficult, tragic time.

Fatal Accident in San Luis Obispo County

As indicated in the report, the Mercury driver will be held accountable for causing the crash, the ensuing injuries, and the deaths of two people. Reports confirmed this individual was driving recklessly and acting negligently. As part of the ongoing investigation, officials will also consider if alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving played a role in the events leading up to the accident.

In the event of an accident resulting in fatalities, the members of the deceased victim’s families may have the option of pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit against the guilty party and, ultimately, receive compensation for multiple issues including funeral expenses and the tragic loss of a loved one.
