When you are about to take a ride on your motorcycle, there are important factors that should influence what you are wearing. These are safety and comfort. There is gear designed especially for motorcycles.

Always think of safety first. Wear protective clothing that is designed to minimize any injury in the event of a crash. The following items should be worn every time you get on your bike:

Helmet – There are several types of helmets out there like full-face, open face and skull caps. Riders wearing a helmet have a 37 percent better chance of surviving an accident.

Sunglasses – With an open face helmet or skull cap, wear glasses or goggles to keep your eyes protected.

Jacket – Consider the weather and how you sit when riding. Make sure it is made out of a material that can stand up to an accident. Also, consider the color. Brighter colors allow you to be more visible to other drivers.

Gloves – Gloves will help protect your hands and wrists from rocks, bugs, and protection.

Pants – Leather, Kevlar and other materials used in pants designed for motorcycle riding will protect you best.

Boots – Look for boots that cover the ankles.

Some other things you can do to stay safe:

  • Place strips of reflective tape to helmets.
  • Purchase safety clothing with reflectors.
