Los Angeles, CA – Authorities Identify Pilot Killed during Fatal Plane Crash along 5 Freeway and Encinitas Avenue near Van Nuys Airport

Los Angeles, CA (August 13, 2018) – Recently, authorities provided updated information concerning the identity of the pilot who died as the result of a fatal plane crash that took place along the 5 Freeway on 12600 Encinitas Avenue, near Van Nuys Airport. The tragic incident transpired at approximately 1:45 PM in the afternoon on Sunday, August 12, 2018. As of today, the Los Angeles County Coroner has identified the victim as 55-year old Marina Del Rey resident Scott Watson.

As revealed by authorities, Watson had been operating a Beechcraft BE33 near the 5 Freeway. At some point, for indeterminate reasons, the plane crashed into a field in the vicinity of Encinitas and Van Nuys Airport. During the impact, Watson was pinned inside the aircraft.

Sometime later, rescue teams were dispatched to the crash site and extracted the pilot from the Beechcraft. However, Watson tragically succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.

FAA confirmed Watson had registered the plane, which was crafted at some time in 1980.

Law enforcement officials affirmed the aircraft accident did not inflict injuries on any bystanders or drivers or cause damage to buildings in the Los Angeles area.

Presently, the National Transportation Safety Board has assumed authority over the ongoing investigation into the crash.

We extend our most heartfelt prayers and our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Scott Watson and wish them strength and peace of mind during this difficult, tragic time.

Fatal Plane Crash in Los Angeles

Based on the information in the report, officials and members of the Safety Board have not yet determined what caused the plane to crash into the field near I-5. As the investigation continues, forensic teams will inspect the plane and examine photos of the crash site to determine if the pilot experienced mechanical issues or system failure. Officials may also consider if the pilot had consumed drugs or alcohol prior to operating the aircraft or had simply failed to comply with established laws.

Depending on the final results of the crash, the members of the pilot’s family may have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit and, ultimately, receive compensation for funeral costs and the tragic loss of a loved one, amongst other unfortunate circumstances.
