Costa Mesa, CA – Jose Olguin Killed in Crash on Interstate 55

Costa Mesa, CA – (December 6, 2018) — Police are investigating a deadly accident that killed 48-year-old Jose Olguin on Interstate 55 Tuesday night in Costa Mesa. The accident took place on December 4th just before 6 pm.

According to investigators, Bernardo Alvarez Zalpa was behind the wheel of a 2002 Honda Accord, traveling on Interstate 55 when he was seen cutting across all southbound lanes of the freeway before violently striking a 2017 Mini Cooper. The force of the impact caused the Honda to crash into Olguin’s 1997 Toyota 4Runner SUV, causing it to flip over onto its side. Per the initial report, Zalpa fled the scene and continued to drive his Honda down the freeway before he exited on Victoria Street. Emergency crews rushed to the crash site where they discovered Olguin suffered fatal injuries upon impact of the collision. Local residents witnessed his damaged vehicle and suspected he was in a serious accident. They alerted authorities and he was arrested around 8 pm in a parking lot near Vanguard Way and Georgetown Lane. Zalpa is being held at the Orange County Central Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. His bail was set at $100,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, Dec. 6th. The driver of the Mini Cooper, a 41-year-old from San Clemente, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

As of now, this accident is under investigation.

Our most heartfelt sympathies are with the loved ones of Jose Olguin. We cannot begin to understand the heartbreak they are feeling as they grieve the sudden loss of their loved one. We wish them strength as they get through these trying times.
