According to investigators, Bernardo Alvarez Zalpa was behind the wheel of a 2002 Honda Accord, traveling on Interstate 55 when he was seen cutting across all southbound lanes of the freeway before violently striking a 2017 Mini Cooper. Local residents witnessed his damaged vehicle and suspected he was in a serious accident. They alerted authorities and he was arrested around 8 pm in a parking lot near Vanguard Way and Georgetown Lane. Zalpa is being held at the Orange County Central Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. His bail was set at $100,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, Dec. 6th. The driver of the Mini Cooper, a 41-year-old from San Clemente, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
As of now, this accident is under investigation.
