Chiriaco Summit, CA -Fred Cormia Dies in Big Rig Accident on Interstate 10
Chiriaco Summit, CA – (November 9, 2018) – The Riverside County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was killed on November 8th in a traffic accident as 67-year-old Fred Cormia, of Los Angeles. The tragic collision was reported at approximately 7:20 a.m. Thursday morning on the westbound side of the 10 freeway at Chiriaco Road.
Reportedly, a Freightliner, driven by Cormia, was traveling on westbound I-10 when it suddenly swerved off the roadway and rear-ended an International Big Rig that was pulled over on the right-hand shoulder of the freeway. The force of the impact caused the Freightliner to be pushed into the open desert, just north of the road. Emergency personnel rushed to the scene of the accident and performed CPR on Cormia who sadly succumbed to her injuries and died at the crash site. The male passenger, who was in the sleeper of the Freightliner, was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of injuries. A Lubbock woman driving the international big rig also sustained injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center. Her male passenger was also in the sleeper of the truck and thankfully was not injured. Authorities are estimating at least 100 to 150 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway forcing authorities to shut down westbound lanes. Police are trying to establish the sequence of events prior to the crash.
The California Highway Patrol has assumed authority over this investigation.
