Defective Seat Belts

Seat belts are meant to keep us safe in the event of a car or truck accident.  Unfortunately, some seat belts, due to design or manufacturing defects, fail to achieve this simple goal.  Moreover, defective seat belts can actually cause additional injuries in an accident, increase the severity of certain injuries, or even cause the death of vehicle occupants.  The simple truth is this: when seat belts fail to perform correctly, people can be severely injured or even die.

Due to recent public awareness efforts, including the national Click It or Ticket (CIOT) campaign, the average rate of seat belt use in the United States is at an all time high of approximately 82 percent.  CIOT is widely regarded as the most successful seat belt enforcement campaign in U.S. history and is largely credited with the increased rate of seat belt use. 

While seat belts alone cannot protect drivers and passengers from all serious injuries in a collision, it is reasonable to assume that using a seat belt will greatly enhance a person’s safety.  Recent data from the NHTSA supports this notion.  In 2007, more than 54% of the passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in traffic accidents were unrestrained.  Unfortunately, thousands of other vehicle occupants who were restrained still suffered unnecessary catastrophic personal injuries or died because the seat belts they used were dangerously defective.
