Can a car accident cause PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious problem that can affect some victims of car accidents in California. Although every car accident victim is likely to feel some degree of trauma, the feelings become a real problem when they don't go away or they become stronger.

In some cases, car crash victims may become so overwhelmed by their feelings of fear and anxiety after the accident that they begin to act differently and disengage from their normal activities. People who are unable to stop thinking about an accident, have difficulty sleeping after an accident or become incredibly uneasy at the thought of getting into a vehicle after an accident may be experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Although riding or driving in cars might be scary after a crash, those victims who are having fear of these kinds of activities should try not to let the feelings overpower them. Staying active and returning to normal daily routines are some of the ways that a person with post-traumatic stress disorder can begin to recover. Another way that a car accident victim can get over post-traumatic stress is to talk about their experience out loud. Speaking with loved ones, a family doctor or a counselor may be necessary for mental recovery after a car crash.

A person who was injured in a car accident that was due to another person's negligence is entitled to file a personal injury complaint against the responsible party. The victim may claim damages for injuries suffered during the crash whether they are physical, mental or both. Many victims of car accidents choose to seek help from a personal injury attorney while preparing their claim.
